Kort svar: Uttrycket ”två vita och en brun” syftar på att en svensk man under restriktionstiden kunde få 15 cl sprit på krogen och detta dracks ofta som två små glas vit sprit (ex. brännvin) en snaps brun sprit (ex. konjak).

Vid tiden kring sekelskiftet 1900 växte sig nykterhetsrörelsen stark i Sverige. Orsaken var att svenskar i genomsnitt drack stora mängder sprit och detta var ett stort problem, både för individer och för samhället.

Starka röster höjdes för ett totalförbud för alkohol och i folkomröstningen 1922 var det oerhört jämt mellan de som ville införa ett totalförbud (48,8 %) och de som röstade ”Nej” (50,8 %).

Redan långt innan folkomröstningen hade steg tagits mot att begränsa tillgången till alkohol för Sveriges befolkning. För att minska superiet bildades 1865 Göteborgssystemet som bolagiserade krogverksamheten i Göteborg och under 1910-talet infördes Stockholmssystem. Syftet var att få kontroll över alkoholförsäljningen på krogarna.

Efter 1922 blev det restriktionerna i hela landet och skulle du dricka sprit på krogen var ransonen för en kväll 15 cl sprit för herrar och 7,5 cl för damerna. När spriten skulle serveras så var det ofta två supar (à 5 cl) med vit sprit (ex. brännvin) till maten och 5 cl brun sprit (ex. konjak) efter maten. Därifrån kommer beteckningen ”två vita och brun”.
